My First Ever Six Sentence Sunday!

Hi, lovelies!
I just discovered Six Sentence Sunday and thought it sounded like a lot of fun! :) It's kind of like a weekly feature/blogfest/meme thing. You sign up, post six sentences, then go out and enjoy everyone else's snippets.

This week, I'm posting from the first page of OPHELIA. (Not technically the beginning. I've already posted that HERE.) Crits and advice are highly appreciated.

---------

As the bus rolls forward, my mind drifts to the guys--I wonder if they'll look for me. Nah...they probably just think I offed myself because of everything that happened.

I shake those thoughts from my head. I don't care if they do look for me. They won't find me, and if by some cosmically unlikely chance they do, I won't go back.

I'm done.

The Big Reveal! (Crusader Challenge Follow Up)

Alright, lovelies, you may remember I told a little fib in my last post. Sorry--I don't like lying to you guys, but don't worry! I'm here today to set the record straight and let the truth be known.

Most of you guessed my lie was about loving opera.

Were you right?

The lie was....

"At one point, I had over twenty rabbits."

You guys will believe I had twenty+ rabbits, but loving opera is insanely unbelievable. :)
I did, at one point, have a rabbit, and yes, its hair did end up clogging the AC unit, but no. I've never had that many of any type of animal.

So, yes, contrary to popular belief, I do actually love opera. I've never put any on my blog's play list because...well, I figured you guys probably wouldn't like it as much as I would. (And I think I guessed right. Lol!)

Just so you know I'm not pulling your leg, here are a few of my favorites:

(This is my absolute favorite of the three.)

This quote (from one of my favorite movies of all time, The Shawshank Redemption) pretty much sums up my feelings on opera...

"I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a gray place dares to dream."
So, was your guess right?

First Crusader Challenge!

I don’t usually like to bloviate, but did you know:

-People have told me my best attributes are my “open-to-everything-and-everyone” mindset and my willingness to lend a hand. In fact, one of my favorite things in the whole world is being able to help someone out.

-I still sleep with a stuffed bear my brother gave me when I was a kid. The poor thing is all kinds of beat up--missing an eye and its nose and has a little cut on its leg from that time I got careless with my X-acto. (Those blades are SHARP!)

-I love opera, especially since I can put my headphones on and turn it up really loud to act as the perfect block for my dogs’ fuliguline-like barking.

-I have an annoyingly big heart when it comes to animals. I’ll take in anything, anytime--even if I’ve already got a small farm living at my place already. At one point, I had over twenty rabbits. They had to go after their hair clogged up the AC unit. Crazy times, guys...crazy times.

So, now you know a little more about me...or do you? I mentioned something here that isn’t true. Can you guess?

Yay For Game Plans! (AKA The Catch Me If You Can Blogfest)

Hi, lovelies. Guess what!
...
...
...
Shhh, I'm building tension!
Okay, okay.
*drum roll*

I've decided to host my first blogfest!

You may remember me mentioning this idea in my last couple of posts (here and here). Well, I've decided it sounds like a lot of fun...and I've never hosted a blogfest before, so yay for new experiences. So, before I ramble on forever, let's get down to business!

----

We've all heard it a millon times: If your book doesn't catch the agent/publisher's eye quickly, they'll probably reject it. So, I'm sure at one time or another we've asked ourselves, "Does my WIP catch people's attention right away?" (I sound like that voice-over guy from every infomercial ever made.)

The rules are pretty simple.

1.) Sign up on the Linky below so everyone knows you're participating and will be able to stop by your page.

2.) On Monday March 7, post the first 550 words (or less) of your WIP on your blog. If you can, leave a link to your email address* in case someone has an especially long critique.
(*Suggested by Madeline of Capricious Existence!)

3.) Hop around on the 7th and 8th to spread the love to the other participants. Feel free to post an updated version after you've gotten some suggestions. Remember: The more comment love you give, the more will come back to you :)

4.) Be sure to leave a link back to THIS post so everyone can find the Linky. Also, this isn't required but I'd love you forever if you could mention this on your blog and/or host that nifty little button.

ALSO!!
On Wednesday March 9, I will choose one of the participants (at random) to recieve a $20 Amazon gift card!

Anyone who mentions my fest or hosts a button will be entered twice. Make sure to leave a link to that post in the comments section so I don't miss it!

If you sign up and don't post, you won't be in the drawing. Sorry, but it's only fair.

SIGN UP BELOW!

**Also, after the blogfest, I've decided I will be posting the entire first chapter of BROKEN on it's own page for you guys to read at your own leisure. I'll include a section for comments and my email addy is always listed on the Stalk Me page.

Plan Of Action (Kind Of)

Comic Copyright Debbie Ridpath Ohi

Hello, lovelies!

In yesterday's post, I mentioned I was thinking about posting a chapter or two of my WIP, BROKEN, here for you super helpful people out there to critique. I asked you guys for suggestions, and, boy, did you guys come through for me. Have I told you all lately how much I love you? Well, I do.

So, I've taken all the lovely comments I got into consideration and, after a long night of not being able to sleep, I think I've come up with a plan of action. (Keep in mind, if this idea sucks, you guys are more than welcome to club me over the head and tell me so.)

My plan is to post the first 550 words (give or take a few) from BROKEN here, leaving my email addy at the bottom in case you have a really long crit/something you don't wanna say here. This is a favor I will gladly return whenever you need it. (Just call my name, and I'll be there.)

OH! Random thought!

Maybe I should make a blogfest out of this. So, y'know, it's not just me posting something and hoping people will help me out of the goodness of their hearts. (Don't worry--I know you're all chock full of goodness.) It seems like it would be more fun that way, and I'd get to involve all of you guys! (And I'm thinking this could be a good way to get to know all our new Crusader buddies a little better.)
Any thoughts, questions, or suggestions?

HAPPY WRITING, LOVELIES!

Just Between Us

(This picture made me laugh. So. Hard.)

All righty, everyone! How's your week going so far? Good, I hope. I'm glad to report mine has been pretty good so far. I've gotten lots of writing done--both with DARK WATER and OPHELIA--and I revised another few chapters in BROKEN. Ahhhh, BROKEN. How you torment me. Y'know what--hang on a second, guys. I want to talk directly to my WIP right now. Shoo, shoo. This is between me and my WIP. You can come back in a minute and I'll give you a cookie or something for waiting so patiently.

Ahem...all gone? Okay. Hi there, darling WIP. You know me--I'm your author, the person who's spent quite a lot of time and effort into giving you life and making you the best she possibly can. We've been through a lot together, haven't we? Let's just take a moment and look back at all the good times. *Long sigh* That's nice.

But, we're not here to reminisce. I have something I need to say. Why is it that you seem to want to do the exact opposite of what I need you to do? Huh--you don't understand? Well, take this for example, I need to cut words off of you. No offense, but you're pretty damn long and that can be a bit of a turn-off for agents and publishers. But here you are, begging me to add words instead. I know, I know...it's for the good of the story, but c'mon! There has to be a line.

Hm? Well, yes, I see where you're coming from. The things I've already added are pretty nice...and they do help paint a clearer picture. And yes, when I did the read-though, I did think it could use some more description and...maybe even a little more character development. BUT C'MON! Oh! No, I'm sorry--I didn't mean to snap at you. Really, come back--I won't let it happen again. Please, just try to see if from my perspective. I've been working on you for so long...I just want the satisfaction of actually finishing you. You can understand that, can't you?

Oh...well...when you put it that way, I suppose I am jumping the gun a bit. I shouldn't try to rush you. If I get jumpy and tell you you're finished when you're obviously not, I'm hurting both of us...especially you. And that's not fair. Okay. I'll admit it: I was wrong for getting so upset. You're just not ready yet, and that's okay--it's no one's fault. We've just got a little more work to do, that's all.

I'm glad we could come to this understand. I knew we could work this out--we just needed to talk about it. Now, c'mere! Give me a hug!

Okay, everyone. You can come back in now. Thanks so much for being so patient.
Here, enjoy one of these fine cookies for the trouble:

(Those do look good...now I want a cookie. Crap.)

Annnnyway, there is actually a point for me bringing you here today. (Surprising, am I right?) I kind of want to test the first few chapters of BROKEN out on someone (once I'm finished tweaking, of course) who I know will be completely honest with me. I don't know how I want to play it off though. Maybe a few people could volunteer...or!

I could post a couple of them (two? Maybe three?) right here for you guys to pick apart and critique. It would be amazingly helpful and I would be forever indebted to you. Maybe I could make it a little more fun and put everyone who gives a critique into a drawing for a prize of some sort. I dunno. What do you guys think? Run some ideas passed me and I'll come up with something.

Are you/have you ever had trouble with a defiant WIP?

HAPPY WRITING, LOVELIES!

Clockwork Angel

Magic is dangerous--but love is more dangerous still.

When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks, and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos.

Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, who are members of a secret organization called the Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What's more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa's power for his own.

Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by--and torn between--two best friends: James, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm's length...everyone, that is, but Tessa. As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world...and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

I have had literally no time for reading lately. With all the writing and editing and planning, reading has had to take a backseat. Which really sucks because I've got a lot of new books I want to read. One of which, as you can probably tell, was Cassandra Clare's CLOCKWORK ANGEL. Well, guess what!

It seemed to take ages, but I've finally finished it!
Now, on to the review...

My first impression of this book was...mixed. (Yeah, let's say mixed.) I'd heard so many good things about it and the premise really piqued my interest. But it started off a little...slow. In fact, the prologue and first chapter put me off a bit. If it hadn't been for people here on the blogosphere wanting to hear my opinion, I'm not sure I would have kept reading.

Well, here I am to give you all a resounding THANK YOU!! for pushing me to read this book. If it weren't for you guys, I would have missed out on this incredible book! And that would've been a real shame. But first, let me just get those nit-picky things that annoyed me off my chest...

The prologue opens in Will's perspective, then switches to Tessa's. This slightly annoyed me, but I'll talk more about that later. For now, I want to make mention of the rain.

"It was drearily gray. Rain drummed down onto the spires of a distant church..." pg. 7

"The Main, its shining black-painted hull gleaming wet with rain..." pg. 7

"Drops of rain stung her unprotected head and neck like pinpricks from icy little needles..." pg. 8

"...her hands, inside their insubstantial gloves, were clammy and wet with rain." pg. 8

"...and a tall hat, its brim collecting rainwater like a cistern." pg. 8

"...but the rain and mist were too thick for Tessa to read them clearly." pg. 9

"...sheltering themselves from the rain." pg. 9

That's enough of that. (By the way, there are four more mentions of rain in the prologue.) Like I said, this is very nit-picky of me and I do give Cassandra big points for her ability to paint a amazing picture, but I found all the mentions of rain in the prologue a tad repetitive and that worried me. I took it as a sign of what was to come.

Boy, was I ever wrong. Things really picked up about halfway through chapter one. *cough*Once Will showed up. *cough* Hm? What's that? Heh--okay, you caught me. I have a nerd crush on William Herondale. So sue me.

And that leads me into my second nit-picky qualm. I enjoyed Will's narration a lot more than Tessa's and would have loved more of that. I can't pinpoint exactly why I liked his narration more (nerd crush, maybe?), but I did.

But other than those very little things, I ADORED THIS BOOK! I really did. I found myself craving just a few hours every evening to read another chapter. (Oh, I guess the twenty page chapters kind of wore on me too, but that wasn't a big deal.)

All the characters are so well-developed. It's rare to find a book with a cast like this one--they're all interesting and full of personality. It's hard to pick out a favorite with all these amazing choices. By the end, I'd come to love all of them (the Shadowhunters, that is) like close personal friends. (Even Jessamine. I didn't think it was possible, but I ended up loving her right along with the rest of them.) Tessa didn't really strike me and I'm not sure if her character will stick with me, but she didn't bother me, which is wonderful, because I usually find I either love or hate characters. Coming away feeling only lukewarm about one is new.

The story itself is masterfully done. Very engrossing and compelling. The pacing was great and the details invoked some really beautiful images. The fight scenes got a little "meh..." in places, but that's alright, because I cared deeply for the characters involved in those fights. And the humor. I can't begin to express how much I loved the humor in this book! I spent almost every other page with a smirk on my face.

All in all, I think CLOCKWORK ANGEL is a great book and you should definitely read it if you already haven't.

HAPPY READING, LOVELIES!

Show Me The Love Blogfest

Hello, lovelies! It's Valentine's Day! A day for couples everywhere to express their love for one another. *big sigh* Oooor, a Hallmark holiday created to make us blindly spend money on silly things like chalky candy hearts and heart-sharped boxes of waxy chocolate. However you happen to look at it.

Personally, I don't mind Valentine's Day. So, when I saw Stephanie Haefner's Show Me The Love Blogfest, I just had to join in. It's a lot of fun and pretty darn simple! All you've got to do is answer these questions and have them posted on your blog by 10:00 AM EST TODAY. Then, pop around to the other participants' blogs to see what they said!

Just have fun with it!

Oh, and did I forget to mention all participants will be entered for a chance at winning a SIGNED copy of Stephanie's fabulous book A BITCH CALLED KARMA? Well, yeah, that's happening too!

Hurry and CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP!

1- What is the most romantic thing anyone has ever done for you?

Oh, lord. There's so much to choose from. Y'see, I live with an overly-romantic dork who likes to make every little thing as gushy as possible. (Not that I really mind. It is pretty sweet.) For example, whenever I leave my computer, even if it's just for a second, I'll come back to find he's typed "I love you" on whatever document I have open.

But I guess if I really had to choose, I'd have to say the most romantic thing he's ever done for me was reading my book. Yeah, yeah. I'm sure you're like, "Whaa...?" But check this out--Travis doesn't read. At all. I think he's probably only read three novels in his whole life, one of those being mine. But he still sat down with me, night after night, and read my monster of a book. Not exactly textbook romance, but it really made me feel good.

2- What is your favorite love song?

Stevie Wonder's I Just Called to Say I Love You. Yep. I'm corny like that.

3- Do you have a favorite romantic movie or book?

Alright, I'll admit it. I'm not an avid watcher/reader of romance. Oooh, wow. What's that I hear? The angry mobs moving in with their torches and pitchforks? Aw, crap.

I guess I'd go with...the middle portion of Titanic?
Cliched answer for the win?

4- Do you have any romantic plans for Valentine's Day this year?

Does watching TV and pigging out on a disgusting mix of chocolate and Easy Cheese count as romantic? Then, yeah. I've got an uber romantic day planned out.

5- What's your favorite romantic treat? (candy, chocolate, edible body paint, etc...)

Oh, this is easy. Chocolates of ANY KIND! I'm a chocoholic. Really--I've got a problem.

Who is Saint Giovanni?

Emily Edwards snoops too far into her father’s personal affairs—affairs being the key word—and is sent away from home for calling him out. She is an aspiring journalist who seeks the truth behind every story—good and bad—so her dilemma is a tough one. Emily can tell her mom the truth, breaking the heart of the person she loves most. Or, she can suck it up, bend her principles, and start her junior year in the land of her Roman ancestors.

Miserable, and hating herself for not coming clean, Emily’s arrival in Florence, Italy feels like the start of a grim prison sentence. But the world gets a little brighter after she meets Giovanni. Or rather, after she meets his lips as he pulls her into his arms, kisses her, and then vanishes, leaving her with the most dangerous desire of all: curiosity.

When fate brings them together for a second time, Emily the Journalist emerges, determined to replace her curiosity with the truth. Who is this mysterious boy? Why did he kiss her and then disappear? But as Emily already knows, poking into people’s private lives doesn’t always end well. Although some people call Giovanni a saint, others call him a devil. Emily soon discovers she’s put herself in peril just being near him. After going her whole life without making a single enemy, someone suddenly wants her dead. And I Said To Myself, "Don't You Ever Give Up."

I've always loved telling stories. At the Halloween parties my family threw every year, I was always at the head of the bonfire with a spooky story to tell. I lived for creative writing assignments in school--that was what I got my best marks on. (Granted, a lot of the stories I wrote didn't sit well with my teachers.) But it wasn't until the sixth grade (still pretty young, I suppose) that I figured out I wanted to dedicate my life to story telling.

Of course, that realization didn't just dawn on me. I needed a little push to see it. Well, a couple of pushes, really. The first one came from my FAVORITE English teacher of all time--Mrs. Reeves. Honestly, if I'd known I'd never have a teacher quite like her ever again, I would've made more of an effort to hang out with her while I could. We had a creative writing assignment and when she was handing mine back, she said, in front of the whole class, "You've written before, haven't you?" When I told her I had, she nodded and said, "I could tell."

Now, that made me feel good. She'd more or less announced to everyone I'd done pretty damn good. But what made me feel even better was getting praise from people I didn't know. I wrote a little story over Christmas break that year and gave it to a friend to read once we got back to school. Little did I know, that friend passed it around to a few of their friends. Lots of people came back to tell me how good they thought it was--people I'd never even talked to! When I saw I could entertain people with something I loved doing, I decided writing was the path for me.

A few years later, in my freshman year of high school, I had an English teacher I absolutely detested. And I was pretty positive she felt the same way about me. We just didn't click. And my grades really reflected the friction. So when our first creative writing assignment rolled around (it took MONTHS), I figured I probably wouldn't do very well. But when I came in a few days later and she handed my paper back, I was surprised to see an A at the top. She gave me that shit-eating smirk of hers and said, "Maybe there's some hope for you yet."

And, naturally, it pissed me off at the time. Later on in the day, though, I got to thinking about it. Writing was my hope. It's what I'm good at. It's what ignites the fire in me. Then and there, I told myself I'd get published one day, no matter what. That I'd never give up--I'd grit my teeth and push myself until I reached my goal. (If nothing else, I could at least go back and laugh at my freshman year teacher. lol.)

That night, I went home and found my first writer's blog, which put me on the path to becoming an actual writer, instead of just a high school kid with a hobby. So, in a weird way, I guess I have that awful teacher to thank for getting me to where I am today. If she hadn't been such a bitch, I'm not sure I would've had the determination to carry on. I mean, I'm sure I'd still be writing (I love it too much to ever quit), but I'm not sure I'd be as serious about it.

What made you decide to write?
What makes you keep going?

The Strange Places Inspiration Strikes

~~When my friends and I piled into my primer-gray Ford Focus last Saturday, we only had three things on our minds. Firstly, word had it some kinda party was going down at that deserted house over on Half Cross Lane--the old, lopsided cabin-type place that everyone says saw its fair share of brutal murders back in the day (strictly hear-say, mind you).

Secondly, we--Aaron, Mickey, and me--weren’t invited. Who ever heard of throwing a party and not inviting the coolest group of dudes in town? Madness, I tell you. Total madness!

And lastly, we were about to crash the pants off that mother! With booze and a fat bag of pot in tow, we sped toward the overgrown party zone with the bass slamming as loud as possible through my car’s pitiful speakers. We were just a group of guys looking for a good time, and maybe some ass if we could get any.

How were we supposed to know we’d be walking straight into a den of undead bloodsuckers?~~

And now allow me to explain. Today, I wasn't feeling so hot, so I decided it'd be a good idea to take a break and play the Sims 3 for a little while, seeing as I recently got my hands on the Late Night expansion, but haven't had much time to test it out.
Well, I start up the game and create a group of new Sims to play around with. The usual stuff happens--they get jobs, learn a few initial skills, and hit a few of the new clubs the expansion offers. All is going well and I've got my mind off work, until...
I click onto Map View (which let's you see the entire city and choose a place to visit) and a purple tab catches my eye. It tells me some random Sim I don't know is throwing a party and my Sims have the option to crash it. I decide to see how that goes and order the entire household to crash Mr. Random's party.
I almost busted a lung laughing when they got there and the whole place was full of vampire Sims.

Annnnnd just like that, I had my writer's hat back on. I just can't escape it, can I? Lol. I'm going to tuck this opening away and turn it into a short story (novella, maybe?) when I have some spare time.

Where's the strangest place inspiration has ever struck you?

After A Moment, I Had A Little Bit of A Headache -- Editing Hangover

I just finished going through BROKEN with my red pen of doom and, let me tell you, my head feels like it's on backwards. Mainly because my process goes kinda like this:

Step one: Once you have your book typed, let it stay on your computer for a while. This way, you can skim it while rubbing your hands together and whispering, "Yesss. One day...one day," to no one in particular.

Step two: After you've worn yourself out with all the hand-rubbing and talking to yourself, check to make sure to have lots of paper and ink on hand. (WARNING: THIS STEP IS IMPORTANT! If you run out of either halfway through, something close to you will probably get torn to pieces.) If you don't, go to the store and pick some up. If you do, get to work on coming up with excuses for not printing for the next few days.

Step three: Now that you're out of good excuses, it's time to print! Before printing, you must collect these things: coffee, toast or some other snack, cigarettes & ashtray (optional), something firm to bite down on so you don't grind your teeth, pain pills to treat the unavoidable headache.

Step four: It's printed! Now, go to everyone in your household and twist their arm (literally, if you have to) until they agree to read it. Live alone? Ask your friends! None of those either? Go to the park and harass strangers!

Step five: Collect opinions. Ask everyone who read it every question you can think of twice. Eventually, they'll throw something at your head and order you out of the room, but you will have most likely already gotten all the information you need.

Step six: Grab a red pen and your favorite highlighter, because it's time to READ! Go over each and every page with a fine-toothed comb, picking out all those typos and misued/overused words and inconsistencies and other "book lice."

Step seven: Go back to your computer and change everything you changed on paper. Would it be easier to do this at the same time you're deleting/changing things on paper? Yes, but doing things the easy way is no fun. Wait until afterwards and make things hard for yourself--it's more fun than a car full of alcoholic party clowns!

Yeah, hopefully your process doesn't look anything like mine. Mine is horrible. Oh! And speaking of horrible. I realized there are a few things I overused like crazy--the word "horrible" being one of them. That list also includes: after a moment, little, bit, sigh, nod, and groan. Little was the worst. Seriously, I wanted to smack myself for calling pretty much everything "little."

Little kitchen, little bag, little cup, little house, little camp, little vial, little nap...
UGH! The word SMALL does exist, too, you know!

I mean, how did I NOT notice I was doing that? Eh, whatevs. I got the problem fixed and that's all that matters. I'm also still trying to cut words, but I think I ended up adding just as many as I cut. (I felt like I needed more description.) I dunno, we'll see.

But I'm happy either way. The story is better than it was and that easily outshines any silly overused words or long, tedious editing process.

What does your editing process look like?
What words do you overuse?

HAPPY WRITING, LOVELIES!
